Expertise

From steel construction company to systems integrator

Sustainable multidisciplinarity is the way to go. And with our known drivers in mind - passion, the power of innovation and know-how - we are making that happen in the Civil & Industry, Offshore Wind Foundations and Offshore Wind Substations markets. All of us together, because a lot of talent is available in our group. Engineering plays a major role as the department that helps us grow from a pure steel construction company to a system integrator, with the mission of accelerating the energy transition. Manufacturing a sustainable world.

EPC-contractor offshore

Our engineering department started as a skilled drawing and calculation office. The design & build - approach proved to be the path to success for the most technically complex steel structures in Civil & Industry.

We extended that strategy to Offshore Wind. We are presenting ourselves as a systems integrator and focus on EPC contracts (Engineering, Procurement, Construction). In recent years, we have invested strongly in electrical/mechanical engineering in order to develop and build offshore projects completely in-house (turnkey).

Electrical/mechanical engineering

In 2017, we created an initial team specialised in electrical/mechanical engineering, to install the electrical part in transition pieces. Remember, without a beating heart, there is no energy movement. We continue to make ambitious strides with the development of offshore transformer modules and substations (HVAC) entirely in-house.

A key aspect of EPC contracts is the design according to applicable standards and Employer's Requirements. Our engineers are looking at how we can further optimise the process. After that, feasibility gets all the attention: design documentation, steel engineering studies and calculation notes, communication with suppliers and Factory Acceptance Tests.

Independent full-service provider

With in-house electrical/mechanical engineering, we can switch more efficiently.

Global solution with impact

We offer customers the full package, without depending on design subcontractors.

Competences

We have the right competences in-house and we are expanding them, to make faster and more decisive decisions.

Interfacing

Being able to perform the many interfaces involved in these turnkey projects completely in-house is an added value.

Cost-effectiveness

Standardisation and optimisation in design reduce investment and operating costs. As a 'system team', we design, produce, integrate and install with a purpose.

Competence center

Experience and competences are key to turning the integration scope into a reality. We focus for instance on knowledge in the preliminary stage so that our offshore projects are prepared to the maximum. We want to be a competence centre, with room for respectful meeting and knowledge sharing between our experienced engineers and new talent. A framework to encourage the Smulders way of working, and where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to our growth as a systems integrator.

And we are fully certified for that.

Always top quality

Throughout the process, we maintain high standards of quality by adhering to established procedures under the watchful eyes of our project managers, quality departments, welding engineers, and technology engineers, with an independent third party involved as needed. All essential certifications are in place, and we uphold the requisite standards. Our welding processes are carried out according to certified procedures, and surface treatments meet specified requirements.  Smulders invests in cutting-edge technologies to apply durable, high-quality paint systems in an environmentally conscious way.

The work for our team starts during the tender phase, with a supporting role. Engineering tries to work out the high-level information in as much detail as possible. If Smulders is awarded the contract, the further detailed design will start. Lists are drawn up for procurement and the electrical team makes the shift to production under the watchful eye of the project management.

We are perfectly in tune with each other.

Our management system is certified according to international standards:

Starting July 1, 2014, due to the requirements of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and the European harmonised product standard EN 1090-1, it is legally mandatory to create a CE marking and declaration of performance for steel and aluminium structural components specified by EN 1090-1. The CPR applies to construction products used in construction works. Only steel construction companies whose factory process control systems (FPC) have been certified by an external notified body are authorised to issue a CE marking and declaration of performance. These documents are crucial for clients (usually contractors) to demonstrate compliance with the technical specifications of the Building Code.  Smulders is certified for EN 1090-1.

Safety

At Smulders, health and safety standards are held to the same high level as delivery reliability and quality. How do we achieve this? We adhere to meticulously documented methods, conduct ongoing risk analyses, and maintain detailed records throughout all manufacturing phases of our projects.
