First secondary steel sets of Hornsea 3 on their way to their final destination

2026/04/30

In March, Smulders successfully completed the safe load-out of the first secondary steel sets for Hornsea 3, an offshore wind farm being developed by Ørsted in the North Sea, UK. The structures were shipped from our Newcastle facility to the Port of Tyne, their last stop before offshore installation, which will begin shortly.

For this project, we are responsible for the fabrication of 133 boat landings, external ladders, anode cages and suspended internal platforms (SIP). Secondary steel production took place at our Polish facilities, with our Belgian site in Arendonk performing the coating works of the boat landings and ladders.

Our yard in Newcastle played a key role through the assembly of the anode cages and SIP units, strengthening local UK involvement and contributing to regional content and expertise. In the meantime, we have loaded and shipped almost half of our scope from this yard.

As the project enters its final phase, we’re proud to be soon contributing to a more sustainable future together with Ørsted. Upon completion, Hornsea 3 will generate 2.9 GW of green energy, thus powering more than 3.3 million UK households.
