Iemants, Mobilis and Rusthoven to build new Gerrit Krol Bridge in Groningen
Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, the Bridges and Locks Alliance (Iemants, Mobilis and Machinefabriek Rusthoven) will deliver the new Gerrit Krol Bridge in Groningen.
A bridge that connected Groningen for nearly 90 years is set to get a successor. After years of preparation, Rijkswaterstaat and the construction consortium officially signed the contract on 20 October 2026. The bridge is scheduled to open to all traffic by the end of 2029.
Scope of the project
The Gerrit Krol Bridge connects the north-eastern part of Groningen with the city centre and crosses the Lemmer-Delfzijl waterway, one of the Netherlands' most important inland shipping routes. Replacing the Gerrit Krol Bridge forms part of a wider programme aimed at improving and making the route between Lemmer and Delfzijl safer.
Iemants, Mobilis and Machinefabriek Rusthoven will replace the existing Gerrit Krol Bridge with a modern movable lift bridge. The project also includes the construction of two permanent pedestrian and cycle bridges that will form part of the new crossing. The surrounding area will be redeveloped with more space for recreation and green areas, including the restoration of the Hunze river and improvements to the road layout to enhance safety and reliability.
The power of collaboration
Iemants, Mobilis and Rusthoven are working together on the Gerrit Krol Bridge through the Bridges and Locks Alliance. Through this alliance, we combine our expertise in the design, delivery and maintenance of bridges and locks. By working with dedicated teams and an integrated approach, we can deliver complex infrastructure projects more efficiently.
The project highlights the value of long-term collaboration, both within the partnership and with Rijkswaterstaat and the local community. Particular attention is being paid to minimising disruption and ensuring timely, proactive communication with residents, businesses and other stakeholders throughout the project.
