In 2016, Smulders opened a new production facility in Newcastle upon Tyne. This facility is mostly used for the production and assembly of foundations and substations for offshore wind farms.
Location
Smulders Projects UK is located in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. The yard has an ideal location next to the Tyne with a direct access to the North Sea. The yard has 3 big construction areas with 3 load-out quays.
Production facilities
The yard in Newcastle covers 32 ha and has a covered production surface of 35,000 m², an open fabrication and assembly surface of 104,000 m².
This yard is equipped with a set of gantry cranes (2 x 600 tons) and a large ring crane (1,600 tons). The yard is equipped such that it can handle structures that due to size and weight exceed the capacities of the Hoboken yard.
Smulders Projects UK has a load-out capacity of 13,000 tons.
Activities
The past years, we built the 46 jackets for the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm and the 11 suction bucket jackets for the European Wind Deployment Centre at our Newcastle yard. In 2019, we started with the production and assembly of the 55 jackets for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm, which we completed by the end of 2020.
In 2022, we started with the fabrication of 2 substations for the Moray West project. These substations will be assembled, welded and fitted out in Wallsend and from there, transported to their final destination in the Moray Firth (Scotland).
