On 8 February, Autobahn GmbH awarded the consortium SEH Engineering, Iemants (subsidiary of Smulders), Eiffage Métal, Hochtief and Max Bögl the contract for the construction of the Rhine bridge in Leverkusen.
The contract includes the completion of the first partial construction of the Rhine bridge, which began in 2018. The bridge will be built north of the old bridge and should accommodate all traffic on the A1 from the end of 2023.
After the opening of the 1,068-metre-long bridge, the old Rhine bridge will be demolished and a new one built. After completion of the second Rhine bridge, A1 traffic will have four lanes in each direction in the extension section between Cologne-Niehl and Leverkusen-West.
